So as I am sure you are aware of, ACL was this past weekend, and for the third consecutive year, I attended. This year probably had the worst lineup it has had since I've been going. I think it was mainly a bunch of really old bands that older people would enjoy.
On Friday, I got there pretty early around noon. I know Asleep At The Wheel goes to ACL like every year and I'd actually never seen them before and since that was like the only thing going on at 12, I checked them out. I couldn't stand them and so my friends and I left and checked out Dana Falconberry. Even though there weren't that many there to see her, I thought that she was pretty good, and it was worth it to go out of my way to see her. Next I saw Thao & the Get Down Stay Down and they were kinda weird, so after listening to them I went to get a pretty good spot for Jimmy Eat World. Jimmy Eat World was TERRIBLE. I hadn't really heard any of their songs other than "The Middle" and most of them just weren't very good. They played The Middle last and I didn't even stay for it because the part before was so bad. After that I went and got some food, then went and got a spot to see fun. fun. actually wasn't too bad, or at least better than I expected. When the guy came out and said "Austin, let's get TUNRTUP!!!" I was like "wow wtf is this" because he's no Juicy J. But they sounded good and had some good songs that I'd never heard before. It was really just a giant step up from Jimmy Eat World. Right after that ended I went to the Honda stage to camp out for Kaskade. Okkervil River was on before Kaskade and they were pretty good. It was nice to catch them before the dubstep concert. Kaskade had a really fun concert with the lights and dubstep but his bass drops all sounded the same and the music really wasn't that great. I had to take the SAT the next morning so I left about an hour into Muse.
On Saturday I got to the festival around 4 because I had to take the SAT in the morning so I went to Portugal. The Man. They played their popular song first and that was nice, but I really didn't enjoy the rest of their music so I left that concert a little early to get a good spot for Kendrick Lamar. Before Kendrick was Grimes and she had the weirdest show I've ever seen. She had these interpretive dancers around her and she was playing the strangest music. I just couldn't wait for that concert to end so I could see Kendrick. Kendrick really wasn't as good as I expected and his hour went by extremely fast. After Kendrick my friends and I caught some of The Cure and some of Kings of Leon and left.
On Sunday, I got I to ACL around 3 and instead of seeing Paper Diamond, I saw Grouplove. Grouplove was awful and I just really wasn't feeling their music. Probably the worst decision of the concert to Grouplove because everyone who went to see Paper Diamond said that it was awesome and I was stuck at Grouplove instead. After that, I saw Toro y Moi. Toro y Moi was actually pretty good. They had some chill songs that were nice to listen to. After them, I went and saw Eric Church. I've never really been much of a fan of country music but he was my favorite act of the day. Once he had finished, I was exhausted from such a long weekend and so I went and got some food downtown, and called it a weekend.
